How to create a car charger?

As my colleague Brian mentioned in his blog, everyone now has a smartphone or tablet. They are a must-have tool for sending and receiving business e-mails, picking up personal calls, and keeping up with the times, and there are always trendy games available, Angry Birds, Candy Bursts, and Crosswords. Our smartphones not only support weather forecasts, but they also guide us. All of these features and functions make our lives easier and more efficient.

How to build a car charger

If you are like me, you will also charge your device for a whole night and start a new day with a full battery. However, due to the power consumption of screen size and display brightness, the battery is now rarely maintained for the length of time I need.

A convenient way to solve this problem is to charge the phone on the round trip. Car DC/DC chargers are not only popular but also necessary.

There are several different types of DC/DC chargers. Many cars have built-in USB ports that can be used to charge these devices. In addition, the accessory market radio and storage radio can also bring this convenience while realizing the music stored in the listening device. Finally, if none of these options are available, you can find a charger in the aftermarket that meets the requirements for an accessory port or cigarette lighter.

In general, these designs take the car battery as an input. This means that the input voltage range is 6V to 14V under normal operating conditions, while the transient voltage is 80V or higher. Each port output is typically 5V at currents up to 2.1A. This type of design has three main components:

Input adjustment and filtering. Input filtering and conditioning circuitry is typically used to reduce EMI and protect downstream DC/DC converters. Some common converter options are the TPS54240 and TPS40170. Both ICs offer a wide range of inputs and features to simplify the design process for engineers.

DC/DC conversion.

USB charging and protection. Protection is especially important. Who wants to destroy hundreds of dollars of equipment in a faulty charger? The actual battery and charger for your smartphone or tablet are inside the device. In order to provide maximum charging current for charging, the charger needs to be able to self-recognize. The TPS2511 and TPS254x devices not only help with this identification, but also provide the necessary USB protection.

Based on the above ideas, I created two USB DC/DC charger designs that you can use for free: PMP7388 and PMP7390.

If you need a single-port charger that is flush with the surface of the cigarette lighter socket, use the PMP7388.

How to build a car charger


Use the TPS54240 and TPS2511 for non-synchronous buck converters with integrated high-side FETs. The TPS54240 can handle input voltages up to 40V. To protect against high surges at the input, an adjustment circuit is used to clamp the input voltage to 39V. The output not only provides 2.1A current, but also provides a “universal charging” function via the TPS2511.
