Texas Instruments ’latest DaVinci DM37x video processor for rich media applications

Beijing, August 17, 2010 / PR Newswire Asia /-A few days ago, Texas Instruments (TI) announced the launch of the latest DaVinci ™ DM37x video processor to help software and hardware engineers easily design more rich media and Portable applications. The DM3730 and DM3725 use ARM® Cortex ™ -A8 and C64x + ™ DSP cores to integrate image and video accelerators (IVA), 3D graphics processors (DM3730 only) and high-performance peripherals (USB 2.0, SD / MMC), ideal for applications requiring high-definition video processing or large-scale data processing. These applications include navigation systems, media players, medical patient monitoring equipment, industrial measurement and test equipment, industrial vision, and portable communications.

The DM37x processor is software compatible with the OMAP35x series processors and pin-to-pin compatible with Sitara â„¢ AM37x devices, making it easy to upgrade products to higher performance options. The difference between DM3730 and DM3725 is that DM3725 does not have a 3D graphics accelerator. Customers upgrading from OMAP3530 to DM3730 can achieve a 50% increase in ARM performance and a 40% increase in DSP performance, as well as a 2x increase in graphics performance, when power consumption drops by about 40%.

800MHz C64x + â„¢ DSP and hardware video accelerator can realize audio and HD 720p video decoding and encoding independent of ARM processor (supporting audio and video codec), which can be further extended on ARM to run more advanced applications and support A variety of responsive 2D or 3D graphical user interfaces for applications such as industrial personal digital assistants (PDAs).

The DSP engine is programmable and supports multiple general signal processing tasks, such as digital filtering, mathematical functions, and image processing and analysis. For example, in industrial applications using cameras, the DSP can run an edge detection algorithm on the video output by the camera to detect whether certain people or objects are in the picture.

Customers can immediately start the development of their design solutions through the TMDXEVM3730 EVM that includes the TI Bluetooth (Bluetooth) WiFi module, which can help simplify development. The SDK contains the Linux kernel 2.6.32 circuit board support kit, supporting graphical user interface, graphics, applications, demonstrations and development utilities. In addition, the SDK also provides a royalty-free DSP-optimized signal processing algorithm library, which can be directly accessed from the ARM processor through various easy-to-use application programming interfaces (APIs).
