According to informed sources, Tencent Technology revealed that Shanghai Feixun (PHICOMM) staged a major layoff in the past six months. Among them, the mobile phone business that has been in operation for more than four years has become the hardest hit area, which has been reduced from nearly 500 to less than 50.
Referring to Feixun, this is a company founded in 2009 with data communication products, including routers, switches, and cloud computing technology equipment. Feixun is well known as a router.
In 2012, Feixun entered the field of smart phones, mostly based on overseas market OEM. According to official data, in the 3G era, Feixun has made great achievements, and in 2014, the global shipment of mobile phones exceeded 10 million. In 2015, Feixun launched its own branded mobile phone.
It is understood that last year, Feixun officially released the flagship P660 light passenger mobile phone, which opened up a difficult road of independent exploration. However, in the face of domestic market competition pressure and strategic issues, Feixun's mobile phone sales in China are few and far between.
According to the source, Fidelity’s global mobile phone sales last year were about 3 million units, a sharp drop from 2014. Most of them are mainly low-end or OEM, mainly concentrated in overseas markets, such as Germany, India, Russia, etc., but the Chinese market is less than 10,000. This triggered the strong dissatisfaction of Fijian's founder and president Gu Guoping.
So, at the end of last year, Gu Guoping regained control of Feixun and began to make internal adjustments. Subsequently, mass layoffs began immediately. Among them, the R&D and design teams of the mobile phone business in the hard-hit areas of the layoffs were all disbanded, leaving only sales and civilian personnel in some areas.
In May of this year, there were also violent layoffs from Fibonacci. At that time, the official denied it and said it was an internal optimization adjustment. As of now, unofficial statistics, Fibonacci has more than a thousand people in the past six months, a proportion of more than 50%.
Some insiders revealed to Tencent that on the one hand, because of the poor sales of the mobile phone business, on the other hand, there was an "infighting" between the top management. "At the same time as Gu Guoping's adjustment, Feixin CEO Zheng Min and the president of the relevant product line have left, mainly because of disagreement," the person familiar with the matter said.
In this regard, Tencent Technology has not received a reply to Fiji. Regarding whether or not to continue the mobile phone business, it said that the core R&D personnel are still there, but refused to disclose the specific number.
Gu Guoping rethought when he summarized the development of Feixun in May this year. Verticalization of the industry is the only way for Fiji to deepen the communication market. The integration of products and services is the general trend of communication enterprises. For the mobile phone business, it proposed to shift to the mode of “Fiji + IDH (Mobile Design Company)â€, focusing on low-end products. This also means that Fibonacci's strategy of independently developing and producing mobile phones has failed.
