Brushless DC motors (BLDC) are traditionally considered high-end DC motor types and are typically prepared for systems with high performance or high efficiency requirements. But as motor drive systems become more integrated and control solutions become more and more available, system designers find it easier than ever to implement BLDC motor solutions to achieve performance and efficiency advantages. To support this trend, TI is providing quality development tools to help you quickly rotate BLDC motors while minimizing development costs.

In a previous article, the author discussed the LaunchPadTM development kit plus the BoosterPack method - this method basically requires a microcontroller (MCU) LaunchPad kit and then adds a peripheral BoosterPack, allowing you to evaluate the MCU, peripherals And the entire system.

This combination allows you to skip the costly and time consuming steps of designing, laying out and commissioning test boards for your own motor system. This kit enables the motor system designer to connect the motor and immediately begin evaluating motor, drive and controller performance. Figure 1 shows a standard three-phase BLDC motor connected directly to the kit. The 24V power supply provides power stage and controller power rails. The oscilloscope is observing the input and output switching signals (compared to the motor current at 2kRPM). After initial evaluation, the LaunchPad and BoosterPack design files can be used as a reference for the final system design.

For example, the LAUNCHXL-F28027F and BOOSTXL-DRV8301 can work together to design a BLDC motor system using (InstaSPIN-FOCTM) sensorless field oriented control technology. The LAUNCHXL-F28069M is extended by this method, allowing the connection of two BoosterPacks and the development of the InstaSPIN-MOTIONTM encoder-based speed and position field oriented control with sensors and sensorless InstaSPIN-FOC motor control. We are currently releasing the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM (Figure 2) using our new generation of BLDC motor gate drivers.

In addition to evaluating hardware, TI also offers comprehensive software and technical resources to minimize development overhead and time. MotorWare offers a comprehensive range of motor control libraries, multiple projects/labs/examples for each hardware kit, graphical user interface (GUI) and technical documentation. The LaunchPad + BoosterPack portfolio enables engineers to immediately begin software design and make progress in all hardware design phases.
