This Power Supply Tips will show you how to quickly convert a shunt impedance to a series impedance (or vice versa). The article also shows that the illustration of this transformation as a function of frequency looks a lot like the Smith Chart. The method described in this paper is useful in simplifying the transformer equivalent circuit or filter network to both end devices. Figure 1 shows the conversion equation for converting a parallel circuit to a series circuit (see the appendix for the derivation process).
Interestingly, if one of the parallel components is fixed and the other is different from open to short, these expressions form circles in the Rs/Xs series. The difference can come from a change in the component value or a component impedance that varies from frequency to frequency.
