US report pointed out: LED downlight performance improvement stagnant or provide subsidies

LED downlight can maintain the overall unity and perfection of the building decoration, without destroying the setting of the lamp. The light source hides the interior of the building decoration, no exposure, no glare, and the visual effect of the person is soft and uniform. Energy-saving: the same brightness consumes electricity for ordinary energy-saving lamps 1/2.

The US Department of Energy recently released a new Caliper Snapshot report on LED downlights, confirming the trend forecast last year. The report points out that although manufacturers have been improving the light quality of this type of product, the average performance has only increased by 1 lm/W in the past 15 months, indicating that the performance improvement of this type of product has stagnated. In terms of funding, the US Department of Energy announced 11 new R&D grants, 10 of which are located in the Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) and the other in the Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR). Both plans are to encourage key advances in solid-state lighting.

Downlight performance

Just a year ago, the US Department of Energy released a Caliper Snapshot report on LED downlights. Unexpectedly, another such report was published this year so soon. But obviously, the US Department of Energy is worried that the energy-saving gains of the downlight industry have been stagnant. In 15 months, the illuminating tank energy saving gain is 7 lm/W, the industrial luminaire is 13 lm/W, the linear luminaire is 10 lm/W, the wall lighting is 10 lm/W, and the decorative lighting is 5 lm/W. Compared to the same period, the downlight is only 1 lm/W. In addition, the average efficacy of the downlight is 69 lm/W, while the average performance of many of the other products mentioned above is close to or exceed 100 lm/W.

There is no clear reason why solid-state lighting manufacturers can't achieve the same energy efficiency as ordinary LED lighting. According to the US Department of Energy, downlights are the first indoor area where LED sources quickly surpass traditional light sources in terms of light source and quality. Manufacturers may be more focused on reducing costs than on driving efficiency.

But the US Department of Energy is not only worried about missing energy-saving opportunities. The report points out that improving the efficiency of LED sources can simplify thermal management and provide greater flexibility in design and form factor. These factors may also reduce costs.

New SBIR and STTR program funding

In terms of R&D funding, the US Department of Energy's recent awards are designed to help the industry grow in tandem with its solid-state lighting R&D program. These rewards once again cover OLED and LED technology. Although the lighting industry does not seem to be so satisfactory, the US Department of Energy still believes that OLED sources will fill important gaps. The US Department of Energy continues to invest in the solid-state lighting industry, including other funding for the fiscal year 17 announced in January. Recently, a report by the American Academy of Sciences pointed out that the solid-state lighting research and development program played an important role in the lighting field, allowing the industry to move toward the LED lighting industry more quickly.
