Hillcrest Labs Releases BNO085 Chip with Sensors to Deliver the Best VR/AR Experience for Users

Hillcrest Labs, a world-renowned motion control software hardware vendor of InterDigital, today announced the release of its latest sensor chip, the BNO085 with a 9-axis system package (SiP), with an enhanced sensor fusion algorithm dedicated to virtual Reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and 3D audio applications. With the BNO085 VR system, even if the control handle is not within the field of view of the system camera, it can benefit from the more stable calibration between the control handle and the head display.

BNO085 inherits all the same features of its predecessor BNO080. The latter is now widely used in VR, AR, 3D audio, robotics and IoT devices. It packs Hillcrest Labs' high-performance, proprietary MotionEngineTM sensor processing software in combination with accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes and low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex M0+MCUs in a single package. The BNO085 offers unique sensor fusion, motion tracking and unique application features to support a range of consumer and industrial products that apply sensors. The BNO085 is newly designed to provide accurate dynamic tracking of VR handles in both internal and external systems for VR, AR and 3D audio heads.

BNO085 improvements designed for VR systems include:

• Improved dynamic tracking through improvements to internal and external camera systems;

• Significantly reduce the delay error so that the control handle is consistent with the displayed picture frequency;

• The operation between the dual levers in the dual lever system is closely synchronized

• Even outside the field of view of the camera, the sensor tracks the rotational motion of one or more levers and smoothly orients the output picture.

Compared to the previous generation, the BNO085 features low power consumption and compact size, while offering low latency, 1KHz sampling rate, smooth directional output, and accurate dynamic tracking. Developers and system integrators benefit from faster time to market, shorter development time, reduced BOM costs, and the highest levels of accuracy and product quality. Currently in the VR field, two well-known brands, 3Glasses and ANTVR, use Hillcrest Labs' BNO085 sensor module to provide their customers with a better VR experience.
