MPEG-1 standard

The MPEG-1 standard was published in August 1993 for the encoding of moving pictures and associated audio for digital storage media transmitting 1.5 Mbps data rates. The standard consists of five parts:

The first part explains how to compositely encode audio and video according to the provisions of the second part (video) and the third part (audio). The fourth part describes the process of verifying that the output bit stream of the decoder or encoder conforms to the provisions of the first three parts. The fifth part is a code and decoder implemented in a complete C language.

From the moment of its promulgation, MPEG-1 has achieved a series of successes, such as the extensive use of VCDs and MP3s. Windows 95 and later versions come with an MPEG-1 software decoder, a portable MPEG-1 camera, and so on.
