US Department of Energy announces huge price cuts for LED lighting price roadmap

LED lighting price roadmap 2015 lighting prices will be reduced from the current $100 to $28

According to a business report provided by the DOE (US Department of Energy), in 2009, the cool white LEDs and warm white LEDs have an optimum light efficiency of 113 lm/W and 78 lm/W at a current density of 35 A per square centimeter. This is very consistent with the DOE roadmap. In the first half of 2010, the warm white LED light efficiency has increased to 93 lm/W, which has exceeded the DOE 2010 target; however, the efficacy of cool white LEDs has not increased.

The way to reduce costs is to reduce the package size and reduce the complexity of the package; another method is to package a larger chip (either a single large chip or a small number of small chip splicing) in a traditional package. .

For example, the Lixeon c product is priced at $20/klm ($20 per thousand lumens) by encapsulating a conventional 1 mm square cold white light chip in a small package (2.04 x 1.64 x 0.7 mm3). The Cree XP-G product uses the opposite approach to package a two-fold (1.4 x 1.4 mm 2) chip in a traditional XP package (3.45 x 3.45 x 2.0 mm3) while still maintaining the same price. price. As a result, the price of its warm white LEDs dropped to $20/klm, while the price of cool white LEDs fell to $16/klm. At the same time, Cree MX-6 products use six smaller (~0.25 mm2) chip splicing in a single package design, resulting in a 1.5-fold increase in total chip area, which is very low. At a current density of 35 A per square centimeter, the price of cool white LEDs dropped to $11/klm, while the price of warm white LEDs dropped to $16/klm, meeting the 2010 target of the DOE (US Department of Energy). The different chip areas and different numbers of chips, the final price of the LED package is similar, indicating that the price of the chip is not an important factor in determining the final price of the LED package.
