In the fall of 2009, Royal Philips Electronics will introduce a new solar LED reading light that is easy for users to read and write at night. Philips' LED reading lights were developed specifically for the African education sector so that students can continue to do their homework in the evening.
According to the blending, the LED reading light is extremely lightweight and can be carried or placed on a page of a book so that the reader can read or write. It has a high/medium/low brightness setting that can be adjusted. It has a built-in rechargeable battery that lasts for 3.5-9 hours, depending on the level of light source selected. The reading light will be available in two models: one for the standard and the other for the compact, low-cost model with a retail price of $15. The new invention is part of Philips' commitment to developing sustainable lighting solutions in Africa, as well as Philips and its partner Dutch government, part of the Sustainable Energy Program (SESA) project for Africa, which aims to be 10 in sub-Saharan Africa by 2015. 10 million people in African countries provide affordable, appropriate and sustainable energy services. The Sustainable Energy Programme for Africa is closely linked to the existing United Nations Millennium Development Goals project.
It is estimated that there are 500 million Africans living in the absence of electricity, and evening means dark or flickering candlelight or kerosene lighting. Because kerosene lamps pose health and safety risks, are expensive, and have low light output, LED reading lights may be a solution. Rudy Provoost, executive vice president and CEO of Philips Lighting, said that these lights can bring "three wins: the living standards of African people will generally improve, LEDs will produce very low carbon dioxide emissions, and the company will benefit from the correct solution."
