Rumored that Samsung has begun testing 4K dual OLED folding mobile phones

Samsung just released the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones two weeks ago, and now there are reports that the Korean giant is preparing to launch a foldable phone. According to industry insiders, Apple’s biggest competitor will start testing prototypes of the phone called “Galaxy X”.

The Investor quoted industry sources on Tuesday as saying that Samsung Electronics will begin testing prototypes of dual-screen mobile phones, which is a preliminary version of Samsung's plan to launch a folding mobile phone in the near future.

This prototype device has a foldable design and is basically equipped with two separate 2K OLED screens (connected via hinges). The hinge will make the phone achieve 180-degree folding. In the first half of this year, Samsung expects to produce 2,000 to 3,000 dual-screen prototypes. In fact, the source stated that Samsung has already issued a component order.

An industry official made it clear that Samsung is currently planning to test the water market through a dual-screen prototype. If confirmed, the experience gained during the test will be used to create a folding cell phone. According to Xiaobian, Samsung’s collapsible mobile phone project code may be “Project Valley,” and its main goal is to create a single flexible display panel for manufacturers that can bend and fold.

Although Samsung will test dual-screen prototypes in the coming months, they are unlikely to introduce devices to the mass market. What consumers will see is a genuine commercial folding device. Earlier reports said that Samsung's Folding Mobile Phone will be available at the end of 2017, but it has been postponed until 2018. In addition, this folding mobile phone is also very likely to be applied to Samsung's VR devices.
