OLED display is still difficult to produce, LG or will lead to iPhone8 release extension

According to Korean media reports, LG Display's contract plan to provide OLED screens to Apple is likely to be postponed due to the low yield of small-size OLED panel products produced by LG Display. From the time point of view, LG Display's OLED panel for Apple's next-generation iPhone product will not be available until 2019, about a year later than originally planned.

Although it failed to meet Apple's requirements, LG Display has already produced orders for OLED panels already produced, so it is reported that this batch of products will be delivered to LG TV and Xiaomi to meet the needs of Xiaomi's next-generation Note series products.

OLED display is still difficult to produce, LG or will lead to iPhone8 release extension

From the perspective of OLED supply, only the Samsung brand has this capability in the global market, and it is the exclusive supplier. However, Samsung will only provide OLED panels for other manufacturers under the premise of meeting the needs of its own products, leaving it to others. The manufacturer's output is relatively low.

LG has been providing LCD screens for the Apple iPhone series for the past 10 years, but from now on, because Apple's next-generation products will use OLED screens, and LG's technology can't fully meet Apple's needs, it means LG. The OLED and previous LCD screens are at great risk of production.

Investing 100 billion to build a new factory to fight Japan and South Korea

At the 5th Electronic Information Expo held in Shenzhen recently, OLED display attracted a large number of consumers to watch and experience related color TV and mobile phone products with its high definition and saturated color. The China OLED Industry Alliance has joined nearly 20 members including BOE and Tianma Microelectronics, covering an area of hundreds of square meters. Some foreign research institutions said that in 2021, the global OLED panel market alone reached more than 510 billion yuan (RMB, the same below), a four-fold increase from 2016.

To this end, BOE, Huaxing Optoelectronics, Tianma Microelectronics and other giants have invested more than 100 billion yuan to build new OLED panel factories to compete with Korean and Japanese manufacturers for market opportunities, while Huawei, Apple and OPPO are vying to launch OLEDs to meet The huge demand of consumers.

Compared with the traditional liquid crystal (LCD) display, OLED has the advantages of ultra-thin panel, low power consumption, rich color and high resolution. Although its cost is relatively high, it is very popular with Chinese and foreign giants such as LG, BOE, and Huaxing Optoelectronics. R & D and production, coupled with Skyworth, Konka, Huawei, Apple and Xiaomi and other color TV and mobile phone manufacturers have invested in OLED, the OLED industry seems to be ushering in the spring of industry development.

Global market size is expected to quadruple

UBI Research, a Korean market research organization, recently released a research report. It is estimated that global OLED panel shipments will increase to 1.7 billion in 2021, which will be 4.67 times more than the 300 million in 2016. The revenue in 2021 will reach approximately 75 billion. The US dollar is about 510 billion yuan, a four-fold increase from the US$15 billion in 2016. The Korean panel makers account for more than 80% of the market, while the mainland panel makers account for 10% to 15%. In terms of investment in OLED capacity in 2017, South Korea has 146,000 pieces per month and 105,000 pieces per month in the Mainland. Among them, the scale of investment in the Mainland has increased 1.8 times compared with 2016. The 6th generation OLED production line accounted for 81% of the total capacity investment, which was 235,000 pieces, which was doubled compared with 2016.

Therefore, huge market potential and opportunities will undoubtedly attract the majority of manufacturers to compete for competition. At the electronic information fair held in Shenzhen, both the large-screen OLED color TV exhibited by Skyworth and the mobile OLED screen displayed by Tianma Microelectronics are high. Clear and vivid display attracts many viewers to watch and appreciate. The responsible person of Tianma Microelectronics told the reporter that they are mainly engaged in the research and development and production of small and medium-sized OLEDs. The OLED screens are mainly used in mobile phones, tablet computers and vehicles. They have a 5.5-generation line in Shanghai and a multi-billion yuan investment in Wuhan. The 6th generation line, the current consumer acceptance of OLED is relatively high, the supply of products is in short supply, many mobile phone and tablet computer manufacturers are waiting in line.

Giants rush to build more plants

The reporter came to the China OLED Industry Alliance booth and saw that the large circular exhibition venue attracted nearly 20 manufacturers to participate in the exhibition, including BOE, Tianma, Kunshan Guoxian Optoelectronics and Changhong. The reporter learned that at present, a large number of manufacturers such as panels, color TVs and mobile phones have been striving for huge opportunities brought by OLEDs, especially Chinese panel makers are catching up. BOE Chengdu's sixth-generation flexible AMOLED production line will be put into production this year, and its Mianyang sixth-generation flexible AMOLED production line will be put into production in 2019. The investment in both factories is as high as 46.5 billion yuan, and the monthly design capacity is 48,000 pieces. The two flexible AMOLED production lines will be put into production one after another, which will be able to establish BOE's leading position in the flexible AMOLED field. At the same time, TCL's participation in the establishment of Huaxing Optoelectronics also invested 53.8 billion G11 projects in Shenzhen at the end of November 2016, the main products include OLED panels.

Last year, Huaxia Happiness Optoelectronics Technology (Bazhou) Co., Ltd. signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Kunshan Guoxian Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. and Hebei Bazhou Economic Development Zone Administrative Committee, and will invest 6 billion yuan to build OLED display modules to build an international advanced display module. There are 13 production lines with an annual production capacity of 80 million pieces. The construction started in March this year and was officially produced at the end of 2018. In the eyes of many panel giants, the OLED industry has great potential and cannot be missed.
