AMD: We Take Advantage of DX12 Games

Tencent Digital (Zhou Shuo) On July 29th, AMD’s chief gaming scientist Richard Huddy appeared in Shanghai ChinaJoy. This was the first time I saw this humorous bald man after the American E3 speech last year. His sentence: "I don't have time to grow old." It's always impressive. This time, Richard Huddy had an in-depth exchange with Tencent Digital on AMD's new Polaris graphics card RX400 series, AMD technology focus, game industry cooperation, and VR industry development.

RX480 is the guarantee of high-end VR experience

Currently, there are only 13 million PCs in the world that meet the requirements of high-end VR and can completely use such products as HTC Vive and Oculus. In contrast, the total number of players in the game has reached an astonishing 700 million people. More than 50% of game developers are doing VR games. This is very different. AMD hopes to expand the VR market by expanding the scale of VR users through new Polaris products. Since the launch of the RX480, it has gained short-term explosive popularity and the market has been very successful. And the RX480 is not just a release, but it is really in stock and has ample supply. In terms of performance, the RX480 is a product that can meet the high-end VR experience, so AMD is very confident about the RX480. At present, the fluency test in VR is called Steam VR. Generally, this test can be judged to be smooth when it reaches 6.0 or above, and our test RX480 score is 6.7 points.

At the same time, lower power consumption is very important for notebooks, and the RX460 and RX470 do very well in this area. Performance improves at the same time, but also has a higher performance and power ratio. This is very helpful for promoting the market share of products in the notebook product market. It is believed that end users can also appreciate the goodness of the products.

AMD has the depth of technology, extensive product coverage, updated drivers at the most appropriate times, and the efforts behind this will be able to bring AMD products to better performance. "AMD's software is more efficient than both NVIDIA and Intel. Having the best stability and support for the DX12 is great," said Richard Huddy.

AMD Adds "Buff" to DX12: Asynchronous Computing and Optimization

RX480 launch, NVIDIA targeted launch GTX1060, two product positioning the same level, but when it comes to RX480, Richard Huddy said AMD is a unique secret: DX12 asynchronous computing.

That's right, the biggest advantage of the RX480 is the DX12, which has an important feature of asynchronous computing. You will see how asynchronous computing has improved the game. In the 3DMark Time SPY (DX12 version) test for DX12 performance testing, AMD products were able to get an additional 10% performance increase when asynchronous computing was turned on, compared with NVIDIA's only 5%. Also when using DX12 asynchronous computing in VR, AMD products will bring additional performance gains. Asynchronous computing is currently used in Oculus and HTC Vive solutions.

At the same time, we see that game developers will make a lot of investment in DX12, which is very important for AMD. AMD really valued the efficiency advantages of the DX12 in game operation. Each vendor would also spend a lot of energy on the DX12. Observe the market, there will be more than 40 games this year will use DX12, which will be the highest share of Microsoft's API. Above DX12, the advantages of AMD will be fully realized. DX12 is also excellent for VR at the same time, so in terms of VR, AMD will gain advantages through various aspects of DX12 optimization and asynchronous computing.

There have been plans for 20nm and 24nm to have 10nm and 7nm in the future

It has been rumored that AMD originally planned to have a 20nm product. Later, AMD took the initiative to abandon it and push it directly to 14nm. Today, it was confirmed by Richard Huddy and it was indeed the case. Not only is the 20nm, in fact AMD plans to over 24nm and 20nm, but due to the relatively high difficulty of promoting the market, so AMD chose to wait for a long time to directly push 14nm. At present, AMD has 28nm and 14nm at the same time, and the target of AMD will be 10nm and 7nm in the future.
